Getting support

Credit options

Learn where to find free, confidential debt support and why reaching out early can help your finances and wellbeing.

Dealing with debt can feel isolating. Remember that you’re not alone and there’s no need to feel ashamed. Debt is more common than most people realise. And millions across the country face financial challenges every day.

For people in the armed forces community, financial pressures can sometimes arise during postings, moves, deployments, or when transitioning out of service. These changes can make money matters feel harder to manage, but support is available.

Keeping financial worries to yourself can take a toll on your mental health. Reaching out for support and guidance is important – not only for your finances, but your overall wellbeing.

Speak to someone who understands your situation and won’t judge you. There are a number of organisations offering free and confidential advice.

Members of the armed forces community can also access specialist support through organisations such as Royal British Legion, SSAFA Forces Line, Veterans UK and Forces Mutual. These organisations understand the unique circumstances that service personnel, veterans and families can face.

Be wary of companies offering you debt write-offs or something called an IVA. You should always get impartial, regulated debt advice before agreeing to anything like this, as it can have a lasting negative impact on your financial life.

Creating a personal budget is a good first step. Start by writing down what’s coming in and what’s going out each month. You can use our videos on budgeting to make a plan.

Remember, you’re not alone. Support is out there, and even small steps can make a big difference.
